The Ring opening sequence

The Ring opening sequence

Editing
There are shot reverse shots as soon as the opening sequence commences whereby the two girls are speaking to each other and it switches between the person looking at the other whilst they are speaking. There is also continuity editing when the girl realises her friend is faking the fact she watched the film then she throws a pillow at her then it continues from a different camera angle with the pillow then hitting her. When the phone rings the girl on the floor is in shock then looks at the clock, after she looks at it it shows the clock showing what her eyes were directly looking at this is called an eyeline match. A focus pull is also used as when the girls go down to go towards the phone the phone is in focus and they are slightly blurred out in the background but then it switches making the phone blurred out whilst showing the girls clearly.

Cinematography
A over the shoulder shot is used when the girl had just made the joke with her friend and she is now sitting on the floor to show her friends facial expression whilst speaking and to show the positioning of the girl on the floor. A high angle is used whilst the over the shoulder shot is used, this may be because she is sitting on a higher lever than her but this may also lead to the audience thinking that she is saying something important. A high angle shot is used as soon as the phone rings on the blonde girl sitting on the floor, this shows direct vulnerability as she is in shock as soon as it rings. An extreme close up of the clock is presented, this is used to show that the time is relevant to the phone ringing, it helps to build extreme tension as to whilst the clock has to do with the phone ringing. A zoom in is then used as the follow up of the extreme close up, this is used to add extreme tension to the importance of this call and the time on the clock. A close up is used of the girl whilst she is speaking to show facial expression.

Mise en scene
A white top with buttons is used, this shows that she is an average school girl and may be vulnerable and weak as she may be possibly young. The cushion is used when one of the girls throws it at the other, this may show that she is quite an immature character. There is nail varnish next to the clock showing that they are quite girly individuals. One of the girls are wearing a school t shirt with a blazer on top, this shows the certainty of them being school girls, the blazer would show that she may she be smart and innocent.

Sound
Dialogue is used throughout to build tension and to also give clues to what may happen and a basis of specific things. There is a non diegetic hollow sound in the background which commences then the phone rings up until she passes the phone over, this is used to build tension within the audience allowing them to think about the phone call with more precision.
