Opening sequence shots

An establishing shot would be used to show the vulnerable girls surroundings showing how open the place is and that anything could be anywhere in the woods. Trees are crucial in this shot as they are obstacles which the girl may have to encounter when trying to get away from the man. The establishing shot would mainly be used to show the girl and how wide dark and spooky the place actually is whilst showing the setting.

An extreme close up would be used as it is an essential clue for the girl to remember who chased her but then the man interviewing her would turn out to have that exact ring meaning that he is the person who chased her or he is linked with the person who chased her. So the extreme close up would mainly be used to present the ring.

The picture on the left is a long shot, this allows the audience to see what is going on. It also allows the audience to see the positioning and the posture of the character and what is happening on screen. It would mainly be used to show the gripping of the mans hand on the girls palm.

The picture presented in the left half of the picture is a long shot as this would show everything which is going on in the scene. Again used to show the posture of the girl and the positioning of her body.

Possible opening sequence sounds

The sound presented above would be extremely useful as it is very tense and mysterious and it presents a horror format as it is the kind of music used when something wrong is possibly happening or is about to happen as it is tense and very patient meaning that it is specifically used to make the audience think into what is happening in more detail. This sound would be a very good one due to the tense moments of silence within a certain amount of seconds then the a quick sudden start of sound again. the seconds would make the audience think that something unusual is going on and not everything is as it seems as this few seconds of silence would throw in plenty of ideas into the audiences heads as to what could happen next. This sound is quite a slow paced rate of the memento of the sound which may give the impression that something tense of jumpy may happen as it is common in horror films for everything to be out of the ordinary with also music, then something to just suddenly happen which would leave the audience in shock.

Vox Pop

From the Vox Pop i have discovered a various amount of different aspects which may be at advantage to our opening sequence. One of the ideas we are going to incorporate into our opening sequence is the idea of woods as they are spooky and very open meaning that anything could happen as said by one of the people. Woods would be a good way to also represent our genre of horror due to the darkness which goes with the whole aspect of it being a horror.

Film Synopsis

The film will be based on a girl being the chosen one for a satanic colt whereby she is hunted down by the members of the group. The girl is related to one of the original founders of the colt and it is soon to be her place to be sacrificed in order for the original leader to continue living, she is regularly being stalked until she realises and then she decides to go to ask a friend for advice and then gave him clues and a description of the people she feels are chasing her. She mentions a ring that every person who has chased her has had leading to more detail of the ring being explain then the man gets out a big old book and goes through pictures of rings whereby she picks out which ring it is then it concludes to be a ring of the satanic colt union.

The genre i will be using to construct my opening sequence is horror. In my opening sequence it will start of with the use of hyperbolic sound of the leaves rustling as a girl runs through woods so her foot steps will be exaggerated and also the use of hyperbolic sound of the girls heavy breathing which will quick allow the audience to establish that something is wrong but they are not sure yet of what it is. Then we will see the girl running and then a sudden flash occurs whereby it changes to a seen of the same girl in the previous scene sitting at a table getting interviewed by a man, the man will be in complete darkness (low-key lighting) to represent mystery and suspicion. He will ask a series of questions and every time a question is asked about an event it will require the girl to think about what happened there fore after every question a flash will occur which will then show her thinking about the scene showing the audience what happened. In one of her daydreams she will get grabbed from behind and the person grabbing her which will leave a crucial clue as she will see a ring on his finger. then going back to the interrogation as the man is in complete darkness it will continue to show mystery as to why he still has not been shown, whereas the girl is in the light (high-key lighting) which allows the representation of innocence to be created. Then the man will lead forward and his hands will come out of the darkness and will be shown, the man will have had the same ring on as was appeared when someone grabbed the girl in her flashbacks. The flashbacks are very relevant the way they are presented as they are used by an actual flash to change the whole scene into the girl thinking about what happened.

It will leave the demographic asking various amounts of questions. A question that will be asked and dawned upon is whether the man interviewing the girl has anything to do with the girl and what happened to her in the woods due to the link of the exact ring on the exact finger on the exact hand as the man had in the woods that grabbed her. Another question that will dawn on the audience is what happened before the girl got chased? Why was the man chasing her?

I am planning to leave quite a lot of the information revealed but the information revealed will be very crucial as to the increase in the audience wanting to know what is going to happen; allowing them to ask more questions.

My film idea fits into my opening sequence due to what is actually happening and it promptly jumps into a scene of adrenaline rushing action which is scary as it is in dark woods. The dark woods helps to emphasise the fact that it is a horror due to the fact that woods are very open and disclosed meaning that there is not much around which leads to the belief that anything could happen as no one would be around to know of it. this leads to another questions being asked by the audience as to why is she in the woods if it is an empty place.

The audience research

What is your gender?
This allows us to look and analyse the questionnaire from both perspectives of a males and females.

What is your age?
This would allow us to understand and establish what type of age groups like our selected genre of horror and also establishes the following questions within a person of their age range.

How often do you watch films?
Asking this would make our research more precise e.g. if someone regularly watch films it would be more advisable to listen to take note of their questionnaire properly as they would know what is expected in a film for it to be appealing.

Whats your favorite film? why?
Knowing a persons favourite film will allow us to get ideas from the films so that we may possible incorporate some of the things in order for it to be appealing.

What do you expect to see from a horror?
Asking them what they expect from a horror will allow us to know what conventions to put into our opening sequence as the most important thing in making our opening sequence is allowing the genre to be recognised, by dasking this question with the mojority of the same answers it should be used due to the fact that if the audience see it they will directly know what it

What are you scared of?
Knowing what the audience is scared of will enable the group to recognise certain features which would need to be used to scare the audience as\. Knowing what scared the audience is a major advantage in a horror film as you know how to scare them.

Do you watch British films?
Asking if they watch British films is essential as our opening sequence will clearly be a British one therefore we must know if they watch British films.

How to you prefer the tittles to appear in the opening scene?
This would let us know the ideal way in how to set off our opening sequence for the audience.

What gender do you expect the lead role to be?
Either gender is fine if the acting goes to plan but to be specific i believe that a female main role of the 'victim' is more convincingly scary and adds more to the theme of horror as girls are more vulnerable. For instance males have more strength than females therefore if in combat a male would win, this makes the woman come across as vulnerable if she was to get into any conflict in a scene. Also as weapons are used, a female would be preferred to be the victim as most horror films use a female as their act is more convincing due to the way females and males are presented in films.

What do you expect from a villain?
This question would let us know what they would be expecting to see from a villain so that we can corporate it into possible making our villain similar in order for the audience to stay engaged.

In my opening sequence i am going to incorporate a specific set of different conventions towards the basis of my questionnaires and which were the most of which answers i received. With the most answered received it will allow me to know what the majority of the target audience present to watch and see in a horror film. One of the main conventions i want to include is the idea of fear within one of the characters so that straight away the audience would be able to recognise that it is a horror.

Conventions of a Horror

Conventions of a Horror

  • In Horror films in general there is a wide range of props used, the main one which is used withing a horror film is blood, other examples are used such as masks to hide identity, weapons for violence and attacks

  • Another convention used in a horror film is low key lighting, this is used to show the dullness, the fear and is a way to relate to their personality. Low key lighting can add major affect to the horror as it helps in many ways to signify that it is a horror film e.g. if someone is getting creeped on they are more likely to be shown with low key rather than high key lighting because of the meaning it would bring.

  • Another convention needed in a horror is specific sound used to help assist in the representation of the genre, this would help to allow the audience to feel they know what the genre is. A common sound used in horrors is non- diegetic incidental sound, whereby there is sound playing to enhance tension in the atmosphere of a specific moment within the film.
  • Another convention which would be used is most probably an establishing shot very early in the opening sequence, a reason for this is that it would let the audience know the setting but swiftly allowing them to know that due to the setting it would be a horror film.
  • Blood is an important prop used in a horror as horror would not be signified as horror if it was not for the blood involved in each film, every horror has a significant amount of violence or gore to show that it is a horror and to add to the film precisely on the base that it is a horror.
This image is a typical scene that may be similarly encountered whilst watching a horror film, a reason for this is that blood is specifically used for the signification of the genre of the film which in this case is horror.

The Woman In Black opening sequence

The Woman In Black opening sequence

Mise en scene
A prop used is a doll straight away, this would intend that a small girl may possibly be involved within the following upcoming scenes. The small tea cups would suggest that they are small children which like to play games. Old fashion dresses are used to present the three girls showing that the film will have a more of an old fashioned base.

Cinematography
There is a zoom in of the window which adds tension and the raising of importance of the window. A zoom out is used at the end after the screaming is heard after the girls had jumped, this could show that something terrifying had happened and the window is not somewhere you would like to be near, also it zooms out on the doll and an establishing shot of the room, the zooming out of the room would show that the room may possibly be dangerous. A mid shot is also used whilst presenting the happiness of the girls in one shot, this may intend that these are normal ordinary little girls trying to just get on with their game with dolls but just something doesn't seem too right.

Editing
Match on action is used when the three girls are walking towards the window showing their foot movements as they walk along. Eye line match is also used when the girls look at the window the window is then presented.

Sound
Non digetic and also sting sound is used in the background to create atmospheric tension. Digetic sound is also presented when the girl gets up and drops the tea cup, also when one of the girls stands on one of the dolls heads and smashes it. The use of non digetic score music in the opening scene creates a very mystic atmosphere as it is a piece composed of classical instruments that if played in a certain way can sound very demented and dark. These instruments are usually used in this genre as they are very good at creating an on the edge feel within the audience creating suspense which is good within a horror movie as it's easier to scare people this way.

The Ring opening sequence

The Ring opening sequence

Editing
There are shot reverse shots as soon as the opening sequence commences whereby the two girls are speaking to each other and it switches between the person looking at the other whilst they are speaking. There is also continuity editing when the girl realises her friend is faking the fact she watched the film then she throws a pillow at her then it continues from a different camera angle with the pillow then hitting her. When the phone rings the girl on the floor is in shock then looks at the clock, after she looks at it it shows the clock showing what her eyes were directly looking at this is called an eyeline match. A focus pull is also used as when the girls go down to go towards the phone the phone is in focus and they are slightly blurred out in the background but then it switches making the phone blurred out whilst showing the girls clearly.

Cinematography
A over the shoulder shot is used when the girl had just made the joke with her friend and she is now sitting on the floor to show her friends facial expression whilst speaking and to show the positioning of the girl on the floor. A high angle is used whilst the over the shoulder shot is used, this may be because she is sitting on a higher lever than her but this may also lead to the audience thinking that she is saying something important. A high angle shot is used as soon as the phone rings on the blonde girl sitting on the floor, this shows direct vulnerability as she is in shock as soon as it rings. An extreme close up of the clock is presented, this is used to show that the time is relevant to the phone ringing, it helps to build extreme tension as to whilst the clock has to do with the phone ringing. A zoom in is then used as the follow up of the extreme close up, this is used to add extreme tension to the importance of this call and the time on the clock. A close up is used of the girl whilst she is speaking to show facial expression.

Mise en scene
A white top with buttons is used, this shows that she is an average school girl and may be vulnerable and weak as she may be possibly young. The cushion is used when one of the girls throws it at the other, this may show that she is quite an immature character. There is nail varnish next to the clock showing that they are quite girly individuals. One of the girls are wearing a school t shirt with a blazer on top, this shows the certainty of them being school girls, the blazer would show that she may she be smart and innocent.

Sound
Dialogue is used throughout to build tension and to also give clues to what may happen and a basis of specific things. There is a non diegetic hollow sound in the background which commences then the phone rings up until she passes the phone over, this is used to build tension within the audience allowing them to think about the phone call with more precision.

Appropriate locations for the following genres

Thriller
A caravan in Selsey would be ideal for a thriller as it is a place where many inconvenient actions may take place such as spooky things but more on the side of thriller rather that spooky horror. To gain permission of the use of a caravan we would have to ask the owner of the caravan if it is alright.

Romantic Comedy

The walking path in Beddington Park would be a relevant as a walk in the park with your lover is always used in most romantic films, this may bring a funny atmosphere as they may come across funny interactions along their walk. I do not think that permission would not be needed as it is a public place therefore filming may take place freely.

Action Adventure

The area of Croydon shopping centre and the surroundings would be a good place to film an action adventure as there are many possible obstacles that a scene of action may come across, also it is big and widely set across the man meaning it may be adventurous as it isn't such an inclosed area.
