Conventions of a Horror

Conventions of a Horror

  • In Horror films in general there is a wide range of props used, the main one which is used withing a horror film is blood, other examples are used such as masks to hide identity, weapons for violence and attacks

  • Another convention used in a horror film is low key lighting, this is used to show the dullness, the fear and is a way to relate to their personality. Low key lighting can add major affect to the horror as it helps in many ways to signify that it is a horror film e.g. if someone is getting creeped on they are more likely to be shown with low key rather than high key lighting because of the meaning it would bring.

  • Another convention needed in a horror is specific sound used to help assist in the representation of the genre, this would help to allow the audience to feel they know what the genre is. A common sound used in horrors is non- diegetic incidental sound, whereby there is sound playing to enhance tension in the atmosphere of a specific moment within the film.
  • Another convention which would be used is most probably an establishing shot very early in the opening sequence, a reason for this is that it would let the audience know the setting but swiftly allowing them to know that due to the setting it would be a horror film.
  • Blood is an important prop used in a horror as horror would not be signified as horror if it was not for the blood involved in each film, every horror has a significant amount of violence or gore to show that it is a horror and to add to the film precisely on the base that it is a horror.
This image is a typical scene that may be similarly encountered whilst watching a horror film, a reason for this is that blood is specifically used for the signification of the genre of the film which in this case is horror.
